Carnaval Sitges y Gran Canaria

Carnival is one of the most popular festivals in Spain, the perfect opportunity to get into the shoes of who we have always wanted to be for a whole night. There are many towns and cities that throw themselves into this celebration, but if there are two that stand out above the rest, they are the Carnivals of Sitges and also those of Gran Canaria.

Sitges Carnival

During the week of February 24 to March 2, the streets of the coastal town of Sitges are filled with parades, floats and costumes full of sequins and feathers. The creativity of the neighbors cannot be doubted. And it is that, for a whole year, the locals work to make the week of Carnival unforgettable days.

In addition to the parades, in which up to 2,200 people participate, many other activities are organized, such as the election and presentation of the Carnival queen, the second-hand costume market, dances with an orchestra, children’s workshops, popular meals , the balcony and facade decoration contests, the float exhibitions or the fun costumed bed race.

The Sitges Carnival has been celebrated continuously since 1976, although old documents dating back to the 15th century are preserved, and it is considered one of the ten best Carnivals in the world. Not surprisingly, the event manages to attract more than 300,000 people, leaving an economic impact that has sometimes exceeded €4,500,000.

Carnival of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria

The Carnival of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is one of the oldest festivals in Spain. Its more than five centuries of tradition have made it one of the most popular festivals in the country, and also one of the most recognized internationally. Not in vain, in June 2011 it obtained the declaration as a Festival of Tourist Interest of the Canary Islands, and of National Tourist Interest in March 2017.

At the Las Palmas Carnival there is a perfect harmony between the festive atmosphere and the ideal climate for walking around in two-piece suits. During the week of festivities, not only parades and festivals take place, but the Queen’s Election Gala and the Drag Queen’s Election Gala are also held. The latter began in 1998 and it was precisely the carnival of the capital of Gran Canaria that was the first in the world to include such a show. Without a doubt, something worth seeing at least once in your life.

And you, what are you going to dress up as this year? Where are you going to show off your carnival creation?
